75 years ago the Allies invaded the beaches of Normandy to begin the final phase of liberating the European peninsula from tyranny and destruction at the hands of the Nazi regime. Today, there will be memorial ceremonies and messages of gratitude to the men who offered the greatest sacrifice "on the altar of freedom" that they possessed. Behind every one of those lives that waded onto the beaches stood countless others back home who made their successes on the battlefield possible, and almost every family felt the loss of life that was so costly to give. Almost two and a half years ago, we posted about the attack on Pearl Harbor, 75 years later, and urged others to thank someone from this generation while we still have the chance. Today, even fewer of these men and women are with us. That is why it is so important to thank them any time we see them, not just on the anniversaries of these important dates.
